What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are strong, permanent and natural looking replacements for missing teeth.  The implant itself is essentially a replacement tooth root made out of medical grade titanium.  They can be used in a number of ways to replace one or more teeth or even a whole set of missing teeth.

Implants require advanced skills and knowledge to fit them, and your treatment will only be carried out by highly qualified implant dentists.

Immediate Dental Implants

Immediate implants are placed directly into a tooth socket at the same visit as removing the tooth.  This shortens the treatment time, and can help to preserve the gum around the implant.  Immediate implants are not suitable for every tooth, and your implant dentist will assess each case individually.

Delayed Dental Implants

An implant placed any time after a tooth has been removed is known as a delayed placement implant.  If you have recently lost a tooth an implant can often be placed soon afterwards.  It is also possible to place implants if you have lost teeth several years earlier.  However, bone starts to waste away shortly after a natural tooth is lost and so it is advisable to have an implant as soon as possible.  Once an implant is placed it helps to stimulate the jaw bone, and prevent further bone loss.

Why Dental Implants?

Everyone deserves a beautiful smile.  With the tremendous advances in aesthetic dentistry, there's no reason to put up with anything less.  With Nobel Biocare implants, crowns and bridges, missing teeth can now be easily, comfortably replaced.

Besides functioning properly, the ideal replacement must look like a natural tooth, both to you and others.  The solutions possible with Nobel Biocare implants and ceramic crowns take advantage of the best aesthetic advances possible in dentistry.

Eat whatever you want

Implants are stable and secure, so you can comfortably eat all your favourite foods.

Keep looking younger

When you lose your teeth, your jawbone can shrink - making you look older.  Dental Implants help prevent this process.

Save healthy teeth

With traditional methods, if you are missing a tooth, the teeth on either side of it are ground down to make a bridge.  Implants do not require grinding healthy teeth.  Implants preserve your adjacent teeth.

One or several missing teeth

Dental Implants can be used to replace one, or several, or all of your missing teeth.  Traditional partial dentures can't offer the same stability or function, often limiting taste and restricting which foods you can eat.

Natural-looking results

New teeth can transform yourself-esteem and improve quality of life.  Again and again, we find that a beautiful smile makes a real difference in people's lives.

Replace missing front teeth

Missing front teeth have unique demands...  Replacing them must take into account both their function and their appearance.  Nobel Biocare implants coupled with Procera® ceramic crowns can achieve a natural and beautiful result.  Procera ® ceramic crowns are completely metal-free, and are translucent just like your natural teeth.  They are custom-made just for you and are very strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Nobel Biocare Dental Implants at our Cardiff Implant Clinic

We use genuine Nobel Biocare Dental Implants and custom made titanium or Zirconia abutments.  Nobel Biocare Replace system implants are one of the most extensively researched and high quality systems available today.  Titanium is highly biocompatible and the surface of the implant encourages the bodies own bone cells (osteoblasts) to grow directly onto the the titanium implant surface, firmly fixing the implant in place.

Dental Implant Costs

Dental implants are precision made from the finest materials.  Biocompatible Titanium actually allows the bone cells to grow directly onto the surfcae of the implant.  Each implant abutment and crown is custom made for each patient.  The costs of dental implants may appear a little higher than bridgework; however, because of the better life-span of implants they work out cheaper than bridges over the longer-term.

When comparing the cost of dental implants it is important that you compare like for like.  A finished implant is usually made up of three parts: the dental implant itself, a post called an abutment, and the implant crown (the part which is visible and looks like a natural tooth).  Many websites will only show the price of the implant itself or not show the price of hidden extra costs such as the abutment or crown.  The cost of a finished implant may be several times higher than the cost shown for the implant itself.

The cost of an implant is usually slightly higher than a small bridge in the short term.  However, because bridges have shorter life-spans than implants and require more maintenance, dental implants work out cheaper in the long run.

Why are our implants so good value?

We only use the finest implant materials, yet we are able to offer dental implants at surprisingly good value.  This is because as a leading implant practice we carry out a lot of implants every year.  We also believe strongly that cost should not deter people from having dental implants when that is the most suitable option.  We have kept our prices low so that our patients choose the best option for their health and lifestyle needs, and not simply the cheapest (and often inappropriate) option.

Looking after your dental implants

Just like teeth your dental implants need to be looked after with a good home oral hygiene routine.  Your dental implants should be checked by a qualified implant dentist (preferably with a Masters degree in Implants) about every six months.  Regular hygiene visits for a scale and polish are important, but the implants should only be scaled with special implant equipment.

Overloading of Dental Implants

Overloading of dental implants is a major cause of implant failure.  The main reason that overloading can occur is that not enough dental implants have been placed to cope with your natural bite forces.  If too few implants have been placed the overly strong biting forces may result in breakage of the implants, or loss of bone around the implant and then failure.  Implant overloading can be avoided by good implant planning by a qualified implant dentist.
